It’s definitely a nerve wracking event – getting engaged. When he called me, he said he was looking for a photographer who knew how to photograph a surprise engagement. I asked him a few questions and what it came down to was this:
He said he didn’t know how to exactly go about it, or what the plan was going to be; he just knew that he felt like he needed to document it. I responded with a simple, “okay, let’s do this. Here’s what I am thinking…”
He told me he was thinking of going to one of their favorite spots – the Newport News City Center Fountain, for her birthday and ask her there. He said that she was onto him being secretive, so he told her he was meeting taking her to meet a travel agent.
We met at the fountain on his lunch break one day, and went over all the details. Secondly, we went to the fountain and he showed me the path he was taking her. He told me all about who they were as a couple, how they met, and what she was like. Then, we set up where I would pick up a bouquet of flowers for them. We left, and were ready.
On the day of, I picked up the bouquet of flowers and waited in the parking garage until he sent me the signal that they had arrived. He took her around the fountain, and then up the stairs in front of the love sign. I was in position to capture the moment.
She said yes, and they are now doing their engagement session with me in the cooler months. If you are planning to propose, let’s get together and make it the best surprise ever!
